Hallie Sala, преподаватель

Dartmouth College

Hello! My name is Hallie, pronounced with the same short ‘a’ as in ‘California’, which also happens to be where I’m from. Probably not the part you’re thinking of, though — I grew up in the agricultural heart of the Sacramento Valley, more than eight hours’ drive from LA. In 2015, I moved across the country to New Hampshire and finally had to buy my first winter coat. I’m now in my final year at Dartmouth College, where I study Russian and math. I previously had the wonderful opportunity to spend the summer of 2016 in St. Petersburg, and I’m thrilled to be returning to Russia as a teacher at the American Home.

Julia Isacson, преподаватель

Dickinson College

Здравствуйте! My name is Julia. I am from McLean, Virginia, which is right outside Washington D.C. I attended Dickinson College, where I was a Russian language and Economics double major. My love for studying the Russian language began in the dance studio, as I have trained in classical ballet since I was 3 years old. After dancing as a supernumerary with the Mariinsky Ballet Company at the Kennedy Center, I began to fall in love with Russian culture and decided to study the Russian language in high school. In addition to dancing, I also love to read, write, listen to music, and “attempt” to play sports with my friends when they ask! Teaching has always been a love of mine, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to work with the American Home in 2019-20. I am so excited to meet my students, fellow teachers, and the faculty!

Mary Diederich, преподаватель

University of Richmond

Здравствуйте! My name is Mary Diederich. I grew up outside of Washington DC, in Northern Virginia before moving to Richmond, Virginia where I studied Russian language, literature, and culture and History at the University of Richmond. I began studying Russian after working in Almaty, Kazakhstan at the Kazakhstan Foundation for Cultural, Social and Educational Development in the summer of 2014 and studied in St. Petersburg at СПБГУ in the spring of 2018. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, painting, and exploring new places, especially museums. I am thrilled to be working at the American Home this year and cannot wait to meet and get to know my students and fellow staff in Vladimir!

Aaron Hook, преподаватель

University of Rochester

I grew up in Rochester, New York, where I studied Russian at the University of Rochester and classical music at the Eastman School of Music. Aside from my passion for music, I have always had a great interest in languages and literature, especially in Russian and American Literature, so I am absolutely thrilled to be teaching at the American Home in Vladimir!

In my free time, when I’m not surrounded by books in a library, I can be found at an art gallery, the concert hall, or hanging out with friends in a restaurant. I love to teach and I believe that learning other languages and about other cultures is very important. I am looking forward to exploring Vladimir and getting to know the people who live there.

Kiana Nedele, преподаватель английского языка

Wellesley College

Hello! I went to Wellesley College, where I studied international relations, history, and Russian. In my free time I play the cello and I like to bake. I was able to study abroad in Moscow twice, as well as spend a summer there working as an intern. I have always loved history, and ever since I began studying Russian in college, I have been fascinated by Russian history as well as the history of Russian-U.S. relations. I have really enjoyed my time in Vladimir getting to know more people and more about daily life in Russia outside of politics.  This will be my second year teaching at the American Home, and I am very happy to be returning!

Sam Breazeale, преподаватель английского языка

Здравствуйте! I grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, and then moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where I studied classical piano in a boarding school. I then moved back to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina, where I graduated with a major in Public Health and a minor in Russian. During the spring of 2017, I studied Russian for a semester at СПБГЭУ in St. Petersburg. After graduating from university in May 2018, I spent two months living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where I studied Russian, before I moved to Vladimir to work at the American Home. During my first year at the AH, I realized that I really love teaching, as well as living in Vladimir, and so I decided to stay for a second year. In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, and cooking. I can’t wait to meet my new students this year!

Alexandros Nickoloff, преподаватель английского языка

My name is Alex and I’m from the state of Maryland, right next to Washington D.C.  This is my second year teaching at the American Home, and I am very happy to be back.

I graduated from the University of Maryland last spring with a double major in Linguistics and Russian language.  I’ve been interested in foreign languages for a long time, and love trying to learn new ones so I can communicate with people from many countries.  In the Fall of 2017, I studied Russian language in Vladimir.  While I was there, I got to see many different cities and sights (like Suzdal, Murom, Volgograd, and others).

When I have free time, I like to do things outside, like walking, hiking, or any kind of exercise or sport.  I also enjoy reading up and studying different languages, by either watching videos or reading.
