About the American Home

At work in Russia’s Golden Ring since 1992!

Serendipity-Russia was established in 1991 by Dr. Ron Pope as part of an effort to contribute to Russia’s transition from communism to a stable and prosperous pluralist society. Building a model American house was the first major step. The American Home, as it has come to be known, was dedicated on July 4, 1992. It served as Serendipity-Russia’s in-country headquarters for its highly regarded English and Intensive Russian programs—and for a variety of other projects. From the beginning, the American Home staff has focused on trying to make a positive difference in the Vladimir area.

In 2016 we transferred our operation from the original “American Home” to a new modern facility with considerably more space for our more than 600 students per term.  We are located at 5 Fedoseeva, Vladimir, Russia, 600000.

Transition

In 2020 Ron Pope retired and one of our former teachers, David Johnson, took charge of the American operations.

David Johnson taught at the American Home from 2001 to 2004.

After teaching at the AH for three years, David worked in Moscow for one year and then returned to the States to earn a Master’s Degree in Russian Language, Linguistics and Literature at the University of Arizona.  For a number of years he was the resident supervisor for the University of Arizona’s summer program in St. Petersburg.

David currently teaches Russian at Vanderbilt University and coordinates the Russian group at Vanderbilt’s language immersion residence hall.

David has developed extensive contacts with Russian- related programs and faculty throughout the US (and with some in Canada) on behalf of the American Home and has played a major role in developing informational materials. David now oversees all activities on the American side related to our activities at the «American Home» including coordinating the AH’s Writing Exchange program and Alternative Spring Break. He also lead Vanderbilt Russian study tours. He is always open to exploring possible new projects.

«Perhaps this is [the American Home’s] greatest gift — facilitating the process by which Americans can peer into another culture, however briefly, and come away with an alternately chilly and snug sense that people everywhere are similar, but also very different — and in ways that can be utterly pleasing and new.»

~Professor Helen Campbell
Department of Business & Management/Department of Criminology, University of Maryland University College-Europe
(Professor Campbell has completed two intensive Russian programs with Serendipity-Russia.)
